Surprise--this is day early! Happy Holidays, from the Spiral. Yes, that tree would be alive and yes, getting it out of the ground likely involved James asking permission from the tree and Christian using his yo-yo world-bending powers to scoop the tree from the ground without "murdering" it. Rory and Christian are festive folks, James just kind of gets sucked into it. Clearly, he is "sprucing up" (hah!) the tree with his healer-like abilities.
